Game drives in Uganda

Taking a game drive in Uganda offers unique wildlife viewing, photography, and conservation experiences. Game drives in Uganda are among the most rewarding safari experiences in East Africa, offering close encounters with lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and even tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The best times are early morning around 6 to 7 a.m. and late afternoon around 4 p.m, when animals are most active.  A game drives provide a perfect opportunity to get close to nature and witness wildlife in their natural habitat.

Uganda has four National Parks where game drives are conducted and they include Queen Elizabeth national park, Murchison Falls National Park, Kidepo Valley national park and Lake Mburo national park

Queen Elizabeth National Park which is located in western Uganda famous for Tree-climbing Lions in Ishasha Sector  these lions are seen resting in fig trees. The Kasenyi plains in the northern plains host dense populations of elephants, hyenas, antelopes and Uganda kobs. The park has over 600 bird species and combines easily with Kazinga Channel boat cruises.

The second is Murchison Falls National Park located in Northwestern Uganda.it is Uganda’s largest and oldest protected conservation area. The Prime game drives take place on the northern bank of the Nile where Huge populations of Rothschild giraffes, lions, leopards, massive buffalo herds, and elephants are seen. You can combine it with Ziwa Rhino sanctuary for best Big five experience.

The ultimate wildlife viewing experience is found on the Buligi Circuit, an interconnected network of tracks spanning the savannah plains, acacia woodlands, and the river deltas. Top specific tracks and experiences to target include Buligi Track which is considered the finest game viewing track in the park. It stretches north from the Paraa area and is home to high concentrations of lions, elephants, buffalo, and Rothschild’s giraffes.

Another one is the Albert track that runs along the shoreline of the Albert Nile, making it highly scenic. Animals frequently gather here to drink water, and the bordering acacia forests are prime territory for spotting elusive leopards.

The Victoria track which runs between Queen’s track and Buligi is a 17 km stretch that is excellent for spotting lions and is a frequent route for tracking leopards.

The Queen’s track is a 13 km track that links the Victoria and Albert tracks, famous for spectacular lion sightings.

Game drives in Uganda

The Pakuba track is surrounded by Borassus palms and open savannah around the historic Pakuba Lodge, making it a hotspot for grazing herds and searching for predators.

The best viewing is during the cooler hours of the day, early morning from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM or late afternoon from 4:00 PM onwards.

Night game drives are permitted using Uganda Wild life Authority-registered vehicles and guides and are the only way to spot nocturnal predators like leopards and civets.

Predators include Leopards, lions, and spotted hyenas. Primates include Bushbabies (galagos) and pottos. Other Nocturnal species include Civets, genets, porcupines, and sometimes pangolins.There are Grazers like Hippos leaving the water to graze, and occasionally antelopes or elephants moving through the brush. Nocturnal birds include Verreaux’s eagle-owls, African scops owls, and Pennant-winged nightjars.

The third is Lake Mburo National Park located in western Uganda and is the closest savannah park to the capital city, Kampala.  A game drive in Lake Mburo National Park is a fantastic, intimate way to experience Uganda’s most accessible savannah park. The park has unique Fauna is famous for its massive herds of zebras, impalas, buffaloes, and warthogs, the park delivers a classic safari feel.

Game drives are organized along specialized pathways like the Zebra Track and Kigambira Loop. Day Game drives are best done in the early morning starting from 6:30 AM to 11:00 AM  and late afternoon from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM This is when wildlife is most active. Night Game drives Start after sunset around 7:00 PM, these 2-to-3-hour excursions require an armed ranger. It is the best chance to spot nocturnal wildlife like bushbabies, pottos, and elusive hunting leopards.

The key viewing tracks are concentrated on the eastern side, passing through acacia woodlands and grassy hillsides. Standard park entrance fees is $40 USD for foreign non-residents and 30,000 UGX for East African citizens. Vehicle entry is 30,000 UGX.

Unlike other National parks in Uganda, Lake Mburo has no lions, cheetahs, or elephants. While smaller predators like leopards and hyenas do exist, making it incredibly safe for other unique activities like guided walking safaris and horseback riding. There are Mandatory Ranger Escorts for those on walking safaris to ensure safety, all bushwalks are led by trained, armed Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) guides who interpret animal behavior and ensure a secure environment.

The fourth is Kidepo Valley National Park located in the remote, rugged northeastern corner of the country. Game drives in Kidepo Valley National Park offer an exclusive, crowd-free savanna safari. Spanning the remote northeast corner of Uganda, the park is celebrated for high concentrations of wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, and large buffalo herds. Prime safari zones in Kidepo valley national park is concentrated in two primary valleys that is Narus Valley and Kidepo Valley

Narus Valley

This is the most popular area with open, rolling grasslands and permanent water sources that attract high concentrations of wildlife, making it the best zone for spotting lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Narus Valley that is Characterized by open, rolling savanna grassland, acacia trees, and freer-draining red clays and loams. This is the primary game-viewing area of the park because it holds the only permanent water sources during the dry season. Expect to see large herds of buffalo, elephants, Rothschild’s giraffes, and big cats like lions and leopards. It is also one of the few places in Uganda where you can spot cheetahs.

Kidepo Valley

A more semi-arid, drier landscape filled with black chalky clays, scrub, and the iconic borassus palm-lined riverbeds. The Kidepo River often turns into a flash flood during heavy rains and dries to a sandy bed in the dry season. It acts as a prime habitat for ostriches, which are unique to this part of Uganda, as well as the Kanangorok Hot Springs located at the northernmost boundary. Scenic viewing and bird watching are top priorities. A more arid, sand-river habitat located further north. It is an excellent spot to view ostriches, the localized Karamoja apalis, and the spectacular Kidepo River.

The Morning drives starts at 6:00 AM, these are the most productive as predators are still active after the night and herbivores are grazing in the cool air and the Evening drives which is typically conducted between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM as the heat of the day breaks.

The Night drives that offer an opportunity to spot nocturnal species such as aardvarks, bat-eared foxes, and hunting predators. The Night game drives require an armed UWA (Uganda Wildlife Authority) ranger in your vehicle.

Park Entrance fees  for foreign non residents is $40 Foreign residents pay 30$ per person and East African Citizen is 20,000UGX and is valid for 24 hours. Day time game drives are free if you hire a licensed driver/guide. Self-drive without a commercial or UWA guide incurs a $10 fee for foreign visitors.

The Night Game drive fees for foreign non residents is $30, $20 for foreign residents, and UGX 50,000 for East African citizens.

Wildlife viewing is highly dependent on daily temperatures and animal behavior and we have three game drives in a day that is morning game drive, Evennnig game drive and night game drive

Morning game drives starts from 6:00 AM  to 10:30 AM, The absolute best time to catch predators like lions and leopards while they are active before the midday heat.

Evening game drives that start from 4:00 PM  to 6:30 PM,  Herbivores venture out to graze as the air cools down, offering beautiful photography lighting.

Night game drives that starts 7:00 PM onwards is conducted using powerful spotlights and mandatory armed rangers. Available in select locations like the Mweya Peninsula in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Lake Mburo to spot nocturnal predators, civets, and bush babies.

The best time to visit Uganda’s national parks is during the peak season for game drives, the dry months from June to September and December to February.
